Talks of ‘Adjusting’ Jakhar Creates Confusion

Punjab Congress Chief Captain Amarinder Singh and poll strategist Prashant Kishore put in efforts to “rehabilitate” Punjab Congress legislature party (CLP)’s former leader Sunil Jakhar as the head of the state’s unit’s communication and publicity department, however that has seemed to not favor Jakhar, whatsoever.

This was an attempt of part of the party to being all disgruntled party leaders in Punjab on board well ahead of next year’s assembly elections. Jakhar, who was then considered a close confidant of Amarinder Singh, had been removed as the CLP leader back in November just last year and was replaced by Charanjit Singh Channi.

Then Jakhar was reassured by the leadership that he would be “suitably accommodated” back in the organization with a “key role” to play in the party’s poll management.

According to sources, poll strategist Prashant Kishor had suggested that Jakhar be appointed as the campaign committee chairman instead of senior leader Ambika Soni, who is also in charge of Jammu and Kashmir, Uttrakhand and Himachal Pradesh as general secretary. The argument was that she would be too busy with polls of Uttrakhand that will be held alongside with Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Goa and Manipur from February to March next year. A call has yet to be taken regarding this decision.

Meanwhile, the newly appointed party in-charge of Punjab affairs Asha Kumari, as a way out, proposed that Jakhar be named as head of the communication and publicity wing and this proposal, in principle, has been accepted, according to sources.

However, when Jakhar was contacted regarding the matter, he claimed that he has never put forth a demand of any kind for any post from the party. “I am already working as party’s spokesman and have to look after my constituency. I cannot afford the luxury of heading the publicity panel,” he told HT.

It’s quite clear to see that there is a lot of underlying confusion that is gradually dwelling. Is the blunder of situations close to the elections something that Congress supporters should be worried about? Some may see it as being so, what do you think?
